French President Emmanuel Macron invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold a peace summit in Paris. A similar proposal was put forward by Denmark and Sweden. Writes about it The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) with reference to European diplomats. Russia will not attend the summit.
According to the sources of the newspaper, back in February 2023, Vladimir Zelensky asked his French counterpart to help establish international relations, including with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The discussion of the issue led to the idea to convene a summit in the capital of France, writes WSJ.
According to the newspaper, the list of summit participants has not been determined. European officials, writes WSJ, intend to involve Brazil, India, China, Saudi Arabia in the event. In addition, US President Joe Biden and other leaders of the leading NATO countries are expected to attend the summit. The conference is planned to be organized before the annual summit of the North Atlantic Alliance in July.
Today, the head of the office of the Ukrainian president, Andriy Yermak, said that, together with the allies, it is planned to hold a peaceful summit without the participation of Russia. The WSJ wrote that the Ukrainian authorities intend in this way to enlist support for the peace plan of Vladimir Zelensky. At the same time, the WSJ notes that European officials are urging Kyiv to amend the points of the plan so that it becomes more acceptable to India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and China.
The “peace formula” of Volodymyr Zelensky, consisting of 10 points, was presented in November 2022. Among the conditions: the withdrawal of Russian troops, the restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, nuclear security, the release of all prisoners. Moscow rejected the proposed plan because, in particular, it does not recognize the annexed regions as Russian.
