Macron and Putin will soon have another conversation about the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

The Elysee Palace confirmed the consent of Russian President Vladimir Putin to a visit to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) by a mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Earlier, the Kremlin reported about this following a conversation between the presidents of Russia and France. Also announced in the near future another conversation between the heads of state.

“The President of the Republic reiterated his concern about the risks posed by the situation at the ZNPP for nuclear safety, and spoke in favor of sending a mission of IAEA experts there as soon as possible on the terms agreed by Ukraine and the UN,”— informs Elysee Palace.

Mr. Putin notified Emmanuel Macron of his consent to the deployment of this mission and to the specified conditions, the French side said. The leaders of the two countries will speak again on the subject in the coming days after discussions between the technical teams and before the mission is deployed.

The reason why it has not yet been possible to organize a trip of IAEA inspectors to ZNPP, apparently, is connected not only with the issues of ensuring the security of the delegation, but also with purely political considerations. Moscow and Kyiv assure that they are ready to facilitate the visit of IAEA inspectors to the station in every possible way, but they have not been able to organize the trip.
