Lithuania expects tough Chinese response for its delegation’s visit to Taiwan

In response to the visit of the Lithuanian delegation to Taiwan, Vilnius expects a “decisive blow” from Beijing. This was announced on Thursday by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, reports today, August 11, TASS.

The diplomat said that China expresses strong dissatisfaction with this visit, as it is a gross interference in its domestic politics.

“This is a challenge to the “one China” principle, a malicious provocation, an encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country. The PRC will strike back decisively.” – he said.

The official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry recalled that Taiwan is an integral part of China. And this, he stressed, is the official position of the UN and most countries of the world.

“International relations depend on the “one China” principle. This is the political basis for the development of our bilateral relations with Lithuania and other states. We insist that these Lithuanian officials stop being a pawn of anti-Chinese forces and supporters of the so-called independence of Taiwan,” added the diplomat.

A delegation from Lithuania headed by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications arrived in Taiwan on Sunday Agne Vaiciukavichyute. Vilnius claims that this is a working trip, which should not be regarded as an official government visit.

Lithuanian-Chinese relations are currently in a crisis, which was provoked by the opening of a representative office of Taiwan in Vilnius in November 2021. China recalled its ambassador from Lithuania and offered to do the same to the Lithuanian side. Then the PRC government decided to lower diplomatic relations with this country to the level of charge d’affaires and sent a note to change the status of its diplomatic mission from an embassy to a representative office.
