Kyrgyz parliament speaker calls for renaming Russian names of Bishkek districts

Speaker of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan Nurlanbek Shakiev called for an urgent renaming of the names of the districts of Bishkek, preserved from Soviet times. He said this during his speech at the first People’s Kurultai.

“We have settlements and localities whose names are borrowed from other languages. We urgently need to rename the names of the districts of Bishkek,” said Mr. Shakiev (quoted from “RIA News”).

The capital of Kyrgyzstan is divided into four districts – Oktyabrsky, Pervomaisky, Sverdlovsky and Leninsky.

Earlier today, on November 25, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov said that conditions should be created for other ethnic groups living in the country to study the Kyrgyz language. “We are faced with the task of teaching the Kyrgyz people to speak, write and think fluently in the Kyrgyz language, to make it a real state language,” said Mr. Zhaparov (quoted from TASS).

The state language in Kyrgyzstan is Kyrgyz, Russian is enshrined in the country’s constitution as an official language.
