The administration of US President Joe Biden is concerned about a potential forceful response from Iran following Israel’s liquidation of the leader of Lebanese Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah, and is working with authorities of Jewish state to enhance joint defense, CNN reports.
Earlier, Hezbollah movement confirmed death of its general secretary Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike on the southern outskirts of Beirut.
“The Biden administration fears that Iran is planning an attack in light of Israel’s liquidation of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and is working with Israel to strengthen defense,” the TV channel says, citing an unnamed US official.
The source refused to specify what kind of attack the US and Israel expect from Iran, but noted that they are participating in preparing for joint defensive actions, for which some US military units are also redeploying.
Israeli army’s General Staff named ongoing operation in Lebanon “Northern Arrows” on September 23. Since last week, Israeli Air Force has been carrying out massive strikes against Hezbollah targets in various parts of Lebanon.
There have also been several pinpoint airstrikes on Beirut, resulting in liquidation of high-ranking Hezbollah commanders, including movement’s general secretary Hassan Nasrallah.
To date, Israeli army has reported strikes on several thousand Hezbollah targets. Observers note that Israel has not attacked Hezbollah with such intensity since the Second Lebanon War in 2006.
