High winds, reaching 90-100 km/h, and extreme heat fueled the flames closing five major routes, including the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway and halting train services. Videos showed motorists abandoning cars amid thick smoke and encroaching fire.
The Jerusalem Post reported suspicions of arson in at least some areas, with several suspects arrested. The Shin Bet is aiding investigations. Despite initial findings pointing to heat and wind, authorities continue probing intentional causes.
Sixty-three firefighting teams, supported by 11 aircraft and helicopters, struggle to contain the blaze. At least 22 people required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.
