Japanese energy and gas companies will soon sign contracts for the purchase of LNG with the new operator of the Sakhalin-2 project, a Japanese newspaper reported “Asahi”. According to her, the price and volume of gas purchases will remain the same. No details are provided.
According to the publication’s sources, Japanese companies have already received notifications from the Sakhalin-2 operator with a request to sign new contracts. Asahi writes that “there was the possibility of adding additional conditions that are unfavorable for the Japanese side”, but in the end the content of the contract will remain the same.
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin transferred the Sakhalin-2 operator to Russian jurisdiction. Foreign shareholders must agree within a month to accept shares in the new company. Japanese Mitsui and Mitsubishi own 12.5% and 10% respectively in Sakhalin-2. The country’s authorities asked the companies not to refuse to participate in the Russian project.
