Istanbul, March 25, 2025 – Turkey’s main opposition, Republican People’s Party (CHP), officially selected jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as its presidential candidate for 2028 elections.

A party spokesperson confirmed Monday that Imamoglu aims to become Turkey’s next president igniting nationwide protests demanding his release from prison.

Imamoglu’s arrest last week on corruption charges triggered widespread unrest. Last Sunday, CHP held a primary vote, allowing public participation. Nearly 15 million voted, including over 13.2 million non-members, despite Imamoglu being the only candidate.
Erdogan’s administration continues mass arrests, detaining at least 1,500 protesters in five days. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators escalate, with 10 journalists, including an AFP photographer, among those arrested.
From jail, Imamoglu sent a powerful message through his lawyers: “I wear a white shirt no one can stain, and my strong hand cannot be twisted.” He vowed to win without yielding bolstering his defiance against Erdogan’s rule.

Protests mark their fifth day as public anger grows. CHP’s bold move positions Imamoglu as a key challenger to Erdogan whose term ends in 2028 unless extended. With tensions rising, Turkey braces for a pivotal political battle.
