A cut in Russian gas supplies could force Italy to declare a state of emergency in the energy sector, Bloomberg reports.

The declaration of a state of emergency implies an increase in the productivity of six Italian coal-fired power plants. This measure will help maintain the energy security of the country.

If Gazprom fails to return to the previous level of resource supplies to Italy by the middle of next week, the authorities will have to replace Russian raw materials with local coal. Rome will be forced to take such a step, despite plans to abandon the use of dirty fuel and achieve carbon neutrality by 2025. Also, according to the emergency plan, in the event of a sharp cessation of Russian gas imports, the country’s leadership will require national companies to limit electricity consumption.
