Italian Prime Minister George Meloni, after talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, said that the supply of fighter jets to Ukraine was not yet discussed. According to her, now Italy is concentrating on the supply of air defense systems (air defense).
“When there is someone who was attacked, all weapons are defensive, at the moment the supply of aircraft is not on the agenda. We must make such decisions together with international partners. At this stage, we are focused on air defense systems,” Ms. Meloni said at a press conference (quoted by RIA Novosti).
George Meloni today, February 21, arrived in Kyiv for the first time since her appointment as Prime Minister of Italy.
Italy should supply Ukraine with SAMP-T air defense systems. George Meloni made the decision to send these systems after a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden. Italy has five such systems, one of them is in Kuwait. According to sources in the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Italy does not exclude the transfer of long-range missiles to Ukraine.
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, explained the refusal to supply fighter jets to Ukraine by disagreements among European countries. So far, the supply of fighters is allowed by France and Great Britain.
