It is necessary to toughen the punishment for crimes against the elderly, children and the disabled. The age and condition of the victim should be an aggravating circumstance. Ekaterina Stenyakina, a member of the State Duma Committee on Labour, Social Policy and Veterans Affairs, shared this proposal in an interview with a URA.RU correspondent.

“In recent years, the number of crimes committed against the elderly has been on the rise. There are known, among other things, cases when older people were bullied in nursing homes, social shelters or their relatives, guardians at home. It is necessary to talk here about the increase in cases of fraudulent actions against pensioners. The tightening of sanctions should be of the following nature: if you have committed a crime against an elderly, disabled person, or a child, then do not count on amnesty or parole, you will receive the maximum punishment, ”said Ekaterina Stenyakina.

According to her, the punishment should be a preventive measure. “An attacker may change his mind 100 times to commit a crime if he knows that he will receive an impressive sentence for him. Therefore, the amendments that should be made to the Criminal Code should indicate that the crime committed against a pensioner will be an aggravating circumstance and will be considered the basis for imposing a more severe punishment on the guilty person. You can still think about the timing, ”the deputy noted.

Elder Abuse Awareness Day takes place on June 15th. It was established in 2011 by the UN General Assembly. On this day, they talk about the problems that the older generation faces, including violence, insufficient care and the negligent attitude of medical staff.
