ISL-7: Northeast’s unstoppable order continues, Chennai hold on to draw

Northeastern United FC’s inaction continues in their sixth match of the seventh season of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). Northeast held two-time champions Chennaiyin FC to a goalless draw at Tilak Maidan on Sunday.

Following this draw, Northeast has moved up to number two in the table with 10 points from six matches. The team has two wins and four draws. Chennai is eighth with five points from five matches. Chennai have one win, two defeats and two draws on their account.

The Chennai started attacking from the very first minute. Lalianzuala entered the box with a Changte ball that the Gurmeet of the Northeast pushed it away. The Northeast, also known as the Highlanders, returned to their rhythm after the initial Chennai attack.

In the same sequence, Northeast made two consecutive attempts in the 14th and 17th minutes and did not succeed in both the attempts. In the 26th minute, Benjamin Lambot of Northeast missed a chance to put the ball into the goalpost via a header for the second time.

Chennai and Northeast maintained their competitive game against each other until the 30th minute, but their defense looked very strong and they were on top in terms of defense. Luis Machado was shown the first yellow card of the match in the 36th minute.

Two minutes later, Dylan Fox’s shot of the Highlanders went up from the top, while in the next minute, E-Dwin Vonspoll of Chennai also missed out on giving Chennai the lead and thus the first half was goalless.

At the start of the second half, Idrissa Silla of the Highlanders fired a superb shot from outside the box, which went over the crossbar. The first change of the match took place in the 56th minute and NorthEast called on mid-fielder Rocherzella on the field in place of Suhair V.

Four minutes later, another shot from Chennai’s Changate popped up. Northeast then made their second change in the match, calling Kwesi Appiah instead of Machado.

In the 66th minute it looked like Chennaiyin had opened their account as Silla had his biggest chance in the match so far. But Sillah could not open the Chennai account by getting very close to scoring a goal near Rocherzela. In the 79th minute, Northeast made two changes while in the next minute its defender Lambot was shown the yellow card.

After the Northeast, Chennai also made two consecutive changes in the 82nd minute. The contest then entered into Injury Time, where both teams had to score points by playing goalless draws.
