India vows to prioritize national interests despite United States imposing 50% tariff on Indian goods, following an additional 25% duty announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

The decision linked to India’s oil purchases from Russia, has sparked tensions, with New Delhi labeling the move “unjust and unreasonable.” The first phase of tariffs took effect Thursday, while new measures on Indian products will apply after 21 days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the issue, emphasized that India will not compromise on trade agreements with the U.S. “National interest comes first,” Modi stated adding he prepared to pay a personal price to protect farmers, dairy, and fishing communities. “The welfare of our farmers is my top priority. I’m ready to face any consequences,” he said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the U.S. tariff hike “economic blackmail,” accusing Washington of pressuring India into an unfair trade deal. The Indian Foreign Ministry echoed this sentiment vowing to take “all necessary steps” to safeguard national interests.
Amid escalating trade tensions Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit New Delhi as confirmed by India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Additionally, Modi will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin, China, on August 31. Where he may meet Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to media reports.
