India’s Ministry of External Affairs called statement suggesting that India opposes BRICS expansion inappropriate and incorrect.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bloomberg, citing anonymous Indian officials, claimed that “India is against further expansion and supports ‘BRICS partner’ category without voting rights to prevent the group from becoming an anti-American entity dominated by China and Russia.”

Vikram Misri, the First Deputy Foreign Minister of India, responded, “There was a question, if I understood correctly, implying that India is against BRICS expansion. I think this is completely inappropriate and a mistaken impression. Last year, when BRICS expanded, we were at the core of that process and participated closely. The fact that nearly every country that joined BRICS last year expressed gratitude to India for the role we played clearly shows our stance on BRICS expansion.”
BRICS is an interstate association formed in 2006. From January 1, 2024, Russia took over the BRICS chairmanship.
In addition to the founding members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—group now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Russia’s chairmanship focuses on strengthening multilateralism for fair global development and security, with over 200 political, economic, and social events planned.
