The number of suicide attempts among minors over the past three years has increased by 13% – from 3253 to 3675 cases, the number of repeated suicide attempts – by 92.6% (from 188 to 362 cases). This is stated in the report (.pdf) Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova for 2021. drew attention to the document RBC.
- According to the Investigative Committee of Russia, the number of child suicides in 2021 amounted to 753 cases. This is 37.4% more than in 2020.
- The number of minors with mental disorders aged 15 to 17 in 2021 amounted to 212.3 thousand people, which is 2.1% more than in 2020.
- According to the General Prosecutor’s Office of Russia, the number of children with suicidal behavior with mental disorders in 2021 was 882 people, in 2020 – 635.
The author of the report, Maria Lvova-Belova, notes that scattered data do not allow us to talk about the exact number of suicide attempts among children. She noted that federal statistics on child suicides are not exhaustive. So, according to Rosstat, in 2020 only 548 minors attempted suicide.
According to the Commissioner for Children’s Rights, the data of Rosstat, in contrast to the data of the Prosecutor General’s Office, do not show the facts of suicides established during the investigation of criminal cases. Maria Lvova-Belova suggested that the Ministry of Health take these cases into account in federal statistics in order to understand the scale of the problem with child suicides.
Among the main causes of suicide attempts, the report lists: lack of interaction in the family, conflicts with parents, mental disorders, quarrels with peers, dissatisfaction with appearance, problems with learning, as well as the influence of “illegal information on the Internet.”
As noted in the report, in 2021-2022, the number of students per teacher-psychologist averaged 607 people, which does not meet the recommended standard of 300 students.
