In Haiti, eight prisoners died of starvation

Eight prisoners died from starvation, lack of water, heat and disease in Les Cays in southern Haiti. This was stated by the representative of the city government Ronald Richmont.

The official sought help from the government, the private sector and civil society to provide prisoners with water and food, and explained that the deaths were due to rising temperatures in the cells where about 80 prisoners were kept, as well as a lack of access to balanced meals.

Richmont explained that since two cells in the penitentiary were attacked and the prison wall was destroyed, the guards were forced to keep the prisoners in the cells without access to outside areas.
