IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stressed that the new shelling of the territory of the Zaporozhye NPP on September 26-27 demonstrates the “urgent need” to create a nuclear and physical security zone around the plant, and that he is ready to continue consultations on this issue in Ukraine and Russia.

According to Ukrinform, the relevant statement by Grossi published on Tuesday on the IAEA website.

“This week, the territory of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was subjected to new shelling, an explosion shattered the windows in one of the turbine halls, which once again underlined the urgent need to create a nuclear and physical security zone around the plant,” Grossi said.

According to IAEA experts present at the plant, the shelling took place around 17:00 local time on Monday near the facility’s power distribution station, a few hundred meters from the training center, but “no damage was reported.” Other explosions were also heard a little further away.

In addition, on Tuesday, around 8 am, there were two more explosion near the channel that supplies water from the reservoir to the station for its cooling system, which is an important element of nuclear safety. According to the IAEA experts, the station structures and equipment were not damaged, but the windows in the engine room of the reactor block No. 2 were broken.

“The shelling and explosions this week on the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP came after several days without such incidents. They show that the overall situation remains unstable and immediate action is needed to reduce the risk of a major accident at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which is now in the middle of a war zone” Grossi said.

It is noted that last week in New York, the Director General of the IAEA began negotiations with Russia and Ukraine on the coordination and implementation of a nuclear and physical security zone around the ZNPP. During a speech at the IAEA general conference on Monday, he said he was ready to continue consultations in both countries.

As reported, Russia, during a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, occupied the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, as well as the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the territory of which was later abandoned. In addition, the aggressor continues to fire heavy weapons at nuclear facilities, the satellite city of ZNPP Energodar, terrorize and torture ZNPP employees, launch cruise missiles over the sites of nuclear power plants.
