US accuses Russia of using oil as a weapon in connection with plans to cut production

The White House reacted to Russia’s decision to cut oil production, followed by a rise in commodity prices. Washington believes that Moscow is using energy as a weapon.

“Mr. Putin wants to use energy as a weapon again,” John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the White House National Security Council, said at a briefing. The broadcast was hosted by YouTube channel Yahoo Finance. In his opinion, this move will not come as “a big surprise as a reaction to the marginal cost” of oil.

Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak the day before, on February 10, announced a voluntary reduction in Russia’s oil production by 500,000 barrels per day. He explained that the decision was due to the fact that Moscow forbids the sale of energy to those who “directly or indirectly adhere to the principles of the price ceiling.”

The Western coalition has previously imposed a price ceiling on Russian oil and petroleum products. They prohibit their companies from providing services for the transportation of energy resources by sea at a cost higher than established. For Russian oil, the threshold is set at $60 per barrel.
