He allegedly crawled his way through and attacked inmate Derondney Russell on May 17 at the Fulton County Jail, WAGA reported.
Images released by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office show a hole just big enough for a man to crawl through that was carved out of the wall of a shower in one of the jail’s cell blocks, as well as the hole at Thomas’ alleged destination in a different cell block.

Russell reportedly suffered from superficial stab wounds to his upper body and is receiving care in the facility’s medical unit, according to an incident report obtained by the outlet.

Deputies searched both cell blocks and found “several weapons, including shanks made from parts of the dilapidated building infrastructure,” and seven items of contraband, including at least five weapons, WSB reported.
“It presents a constant challenge for us to eliminate things like this from access to the inmates,” interim Fulton County Jail Cmdr. Curtis Clark told the outlet.

“This jail has clearly outlived its useful life. That reality makes it even more challenging for us to do our job of providing the safest possible environment not only for staff, but for the inmates as well.”
The motive for the stabbing was unclear.
Criminal charges against Thomas for the attack are still pending.
