In a hung parliament, passing any laws will be as challenging for Bayrou as it was for previous Prime Ministers, say political analysts.
After days of political deadlock, France now has a new Prime Minister. Ending all speculation, President Macron announced Bayrou’s name on Friday.
Bayrou, 73, is the leader of the Democratic Party of France and a close ally of Macron. He is well-known in political circles and influential in southwestern France. He also served as a mayor in a French municipality in the past.

Last week, France’s parliament passed a no-confidence motion against former Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government over the social security bill, leading to its fall. Following this, Macron chose Bayrou as the new Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, the far-right National Rally party, led by Jordan Bardella, has rejected Bayrou’s appointment. Bardella stated that they would bring a no-confidence motion against him without delay.
As a centrist, Bayrou not expected to take strict measures against immigrants, which aligns with his political stance. Reports suggest he will soon prepare the list of ministers for his cabinet.
However, political analysts believe passing laws in a hung parliament will remain a significant challenge for Bayrou.
