EU countries reacted ambiguously to the call of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to ban the issuance of visas to Russian citizens. The danger of a split was warned by the former Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, who published a corresponding post on Twitter.
He noted that the disunity of European states would be beneficial only to Russia. Therefore, the politician called the decision of the German authorities more reasonable than the Estonian ones. Recently, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz refused to ban all Russians from entering the country without exception.
“When considering the issue of the visa regime for Russians, it is important for the European Union to come to a common position,” Tuomioya said.
Meanwhile, Finnish journalist Kosti Heiskanen said that in the near future Helsinki may stop letting Russians cross the border. In his opinion, the decision will depend on the position of the United States.
