Experts have reconstructed the movement of the glacier on Novaya Zemlya for a thousand years

Researchers of the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry (GEOKHI) named after. V. I. Vernadsky RAS reconstructed the history of the movement of the Goluboy glacier, located on the eastern coast of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, for a thousand years, which made it possible to restore data on global climate changes. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.

As the authors of the work note, the glacier resembles a river, as it is in motion and on its way comes into contact with rocks, the particles of which are deposited in the ice. By studying these deposits and the intensity of their accumulation, scientists can reconstruct the history of its movement. And also set the periods of climate change. For example, the presence of large rock fragments indicates periods of active melting.

“The study of the sedimentary section of the bay (a vertical sequence of sediment layers accumulated over a certain period of time) showed that since the beginning of the 17th century, the glacier has sharply reduced the dynamics of movement, which indicates a period of severe cooling … Moreover, the study of phenological records for the last millennium (annual tree rings , layers of ice cores, crystal growth bands, etc.) showed that a sharp cooling was observed at the same time in Europe and Asia. In other words, it was global in nature and was reflected in historical records,” – the message says.

Thus, the period of global cooling in the 17th century coincided with the great famine of 1601-1603 in Russia and the change of ruling dynasties – the country was headed by the Romanovs. In the annals of that time, one can find references to frosts in August or heavy rains in spring, which did not allow a good harvest. In addition, at the same time, there was a strong volcanic eruption in Peru, which could be one of the reasons for such large-scale climate changes – the period of global cooling lasted about 300 years.
