At a bilateral meeting between the presidents of Belarus and Russia, Minsk’s pressure on Russian property will be discussed, and Alexander Lukashenko may also ask Vladimir Putin for support in the elections, said Bohdan Bezpalko, member of the Council on Interethnic Relations under the President of the Russian Federation.
Presidents of Russia and Belarus Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko will hold a bilateral meeting as part of the opening of the Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier on Tuesday, June 30. Lukashenko said earlier that he plans to discuss with outside interference in elections in the republic with Putin.
At the same time, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the head of the Russian state, noted that Russia was not going to interfere in the electoral processes in other countries, especially in Belarus, and Minsk did not present arguments for interference in the election process by the Russian Federation.
“The situation in Belarus will be discussed there first. Related not so much with the elections as with pressure on the property of Russian corporations. In particular, the events surrounding Belgazprombank. Perhaps the fate of other Russian property will be discussed, namely Gazprom Transgaz Belarus, the former Beltransgaz , which was bought for more than five billion dollars – also by Gazprom, “Bezpalko told RIA Novosti.
In addition, according to his forecast, President Lukashenko, “being the president of Belarus, is going to remain in this post for another term, and he will seek support from Russia, either he will ask her or he will demand her.”
According to Bezpalko, now there is no Russian interference in the Belarusian elections, and Lukashenko speaks of interference, “just to remove a competitor from the political arena or at least from the election race.”
“The fact that Viktor Babariko decided to become a presidential candidate is his personal decision. Moreover, Viktor Babariko is far from being called a pro-Russian candidate … Russian elites are very reserved about the Belarusian elections and prefer to wait for their results. And then build relations with that leader who will hold the presidency, “- said the expert.
In June, searches were carried out at the head office of Belgazprombank, which was previously headed by Babariko. The state control committee of the republic said that an organized criminal group operated on the basis of the bank, withdrawing money abroad. The KGC has opened criminal cases under articles on tax evasion and legalization of proceeds of crime.
On June 18, Babariko and his son Eduard, who heads the electoral headquarters of his father, were detained. In total, about 20 people were detained, including top managers of the bank.
Now the investigation of the case is entrusted to the KGB, the FIU provides operational support for the investigation. Father and son Babariko are in the KGB jail, they have been charged, but the articles have not been disclosed.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko previously noted that representatives of Belgazprombank began to prepare “bags of money” and paintings from their corporate collection for export from Belarus, and in Minsk, it was necessary to “stop this action.”
