Borrell: EU defense ministers agreed to supply Ukraine with everything they have
At an informal meeting in Stockholm, the heads of the EU defense departments recognized the urgent need to supply Ukraine with all the weapons that are in stocks. This was announced by the head of the EU foreign service Josep Borrell, his words were quoted “Kommersant”.
The head of European diplomacy presented a joint plan to solve the problem of a shortage of shells from the EU countries for supplies to Ukraine. However, Borrell admitted that his details are yet to be agreed upon.
The main problem of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is the lack of 155-millimeter caliber shells for artillery. Ammunition consumption exceeds the industrial capacity of Ukraine’s allies. Kyiv’s partners decided that the problem should be solved by increasing the production and retraining of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, so that the Ukrainian military would spend less shells with greater accuracy.
However, Ukraine urgently needs ammunition, so the EU defense ministers agreed to send almost all the shells left in the warehouses to the battlefield. However, politicians have not decided how these supplies will be financed.
Borrell proposed to allocate a new support package for Ukraine’s emergency needs from available reserves – one billion euros from the European Peace Fund.
