Erdogan offered Zelensky mediation in ensuring security at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a telephone conversation. During the talks, the Turkish leader invited Mr. Zelensky to act as an intermediary for the creation of a demilitarized zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

Mr. Erdogan noted the successful exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine. Work on this process, the Turkish President noted, took place for a long time. He also recalled the success of the “grain agreement”.

“A similar approach can be demonstrated in the context of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, and the proposal for the necessary mediation and assistance in establishing a demilitarized zone around the plant is valid,” they said. TASS in the office of the head of Turkey.

The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, has been under the control of the Russian military since March. In August, the nuclear facility began to be shelled regularly. Russia accuses the Armed Forces of Ukraine of shelling, while Ukraine claims that Russia itself is shelling the facility where its troops are stationed. In September, an IAEA mission visited the station to assess the safety of a nuclear facility. The organization called for the creation of a “safe zone” around the nuclear power plant.

On September 27, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, announced that several explosions had occurred at the ZNPP during the week. According to him, Russia and Ukraine have begun consultations with the IAEA on the issue of ensuring the plant’s safety. Kyiv claims that the only way to ensure the security of the ZNPP is by transferring control to the Ukrainian side. Russia refuses to do this.
