It is specified that the Embassy of Ukraine in Germany begins “a new format for commemorating the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation on May 8 and all the victims of World War II.” It is explained that the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Alexey Makeev and Ukrainian representatives in Berlin deliberately refuse to lay wreaths and flowers at Soviet memorials or places with Soviet symbols in the German capital.
“This year will be the first when Ukrainian diplomats in Germany will not lay flowers at Soviet monuments,” — indicated in the Ukrainian diplomatic mission.
According to the Ukrainian embassy, Ambassador Makeev, together with the ruling mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, will visit the central German Neue Wache memorial in memory of “victims of war and tyranny” on May 8 and lay flowers there. Then the Ukrainian diplomat will visit the Reichstag building, where he will examine the inscriptions left there on the walls by Soviet soldiers in 1945. In the evening, employees of the Ukrainian Embassy are planning to take part in a commemorative procession.
Previously IA REGNUM reported that the administrative court of Berlin canceled the previously imposed ban on the demonstration of the Russian flag at the memorials on May 8 and 9. The city police lodged a complaint with the Supreme Administrative Court against this decision. Law enforcement officers do not object to the demonstration of Ukrainian flags.
The ban on the demonstration of Russian and Ukrainian flags at Soviet memorials during the celebration of the victory over Nazi Germany on May 8 and 9 was introduced on May 5 at the request of the Berlin police. The next day, the administrative court of the German capital lifted the ban on the flag of Ukraine.
