Ecuador calls for popular uprising over arrest of protest leader

Ecuadorian police have detained an indigenous leader after people in the country blocked roads to protest high fuel prices, France-Presse reported on June 15.

Arrest of the leader of the influential Confederation of Indigenous Peoples of Ecuador (Conaie) Leonidas Isa provoked popular outrage, and the authorities were forced to send SWAT police and soldiers to guard the prosecutor’s office, where he is being held pending a hearing in his case.

Demonstrators gathered outside the building holding banners reading “Free Ise!” and “We are not for violence, we are for resistance.”

Isa, the leader of the Quechua Pansaleo community, was arrested in Pastocaglia, about 20 kilometers south of the capital, Quito, on suspicion of “sabotage,” the interior ministry said.
