Donald Trump’s campaign team requested military assistance from U.S. authorities, citing a possible threat from Iran, according to The Washington Post which referenced sources and emails.
Trump’s team reportedly asked for military aircraft for his flights during the final weeks of the campaign, restricted airspace over his residences and rally locations, bulletproof glass in seven swing states, and military vehicles for his transport.
These requests came after Trump’s advisors were informed of a possible assassination plot by Iranian authorities. Sources say Trump and his team have grown frustrated with U.S. Secret Service, feeling that while security had been increased, it wasn’t enough for the demands of a presidential campaign.
The team also believes that U.S. authorities haven’t provided Trump with “adequate” protection. Although there’s no concrete evidence linking Iran to recent attempts on Trump’s life, the FBI hasn’t ruled out the possibility. This has led Trump’s advisors to worry about potential threats from drones and missiles. As a precaution, Trump has occasionally flown in unmarked planes without his name on them.
The Washington Post highlights that Trump’s request for military aviation unprecedented. One official called it “extraordinary” for Secret Service to meet such a demand.
In September, Trump’s campaign claimed that US intelligence had warned of growing threats from Iran against Trump.
Former president without offering details, accused Tehran of making failed attempts on his life and hinted they might try again. However, Trump emphasized that no threats scare him, adding that U.S. military forces are “watching and waiting” to see how events unfold.
