Donald Trump refuses to testify in financial fraud case

Former US President Donald Trump has said he will not testify in a New York City prosecutor’s investigation into financial fraud. This is reported by the American media, in particular CNN.

“I refuse to answer questions based on the rights and privileges that are given to every citizen by the American constitution,” Mr. Trump wrote on the social network he launched Truth Social. The Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution gives citizens the right not to incriminate themselves. “I once asked: “Why use the fifth amendment if you are innocent.” Now I know the answer to this question. When your family, your company and everyone around you becomes the target of a baseless, politically motivated witch hunt… you have no choice,” Mr Trump said in a statement.

The investigation concerns the Trump Organization group of companies owned by Mr. Trump. According to investigators, she manipulated financial statements, overestimated or underestimated the value of her real estate in order to obtain tax benefits, better loans, and more convenient conditions for insurance rates. Trump and his two adult children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, have already tried to avoid testifying in the case. In February, the New York State Supreme Court ordered them to testify under oath in the case within 14 days. According to The Associated Pressthey recently testified.

On August 8, the FBI raided Trump’s Florida residence without warning. Mr. Trump himself considered it “an attack on the justice system and radical left-wing Democrats.”
