There have been reports in the media that Donald Trump may take steps to remove tariffs on UK goods after he becomes US president-elect.
US President-elect Donald Trump may strike a deal with Britain to scrap tariffs on imported goods and services, the Telegraph reports.
Earlier he announced plans for a protectionist approach. Where tariffs were potentially 10-20% on imports and up to 60% on Chinese imports.
Britain could be exempt from those tariffs under a special deal, sources close to Trump have indicated. Britain hopes to finalize this matter in the coming months.
British ministers and diplomats are working to leverage the “special relationship” between the U.K. and the U.S. to secure the deal.
In any trade talks, London is expected to prioritize its services exports, worth £130bn last year.
Trump’s team is likely to reject requests to lift tariffs on critical goods for US domestic production, like cars, according to British government source.
