Acne and all sorts of rashes on the face are usually associated with youth, but sometimes acne bothers in adulthood. Cosmetologist “SM-Cosmetology” Diana Takhtarova called Life the reasons for this phenomenon.
“This disease occurs at any age in both women and men. Clinical manifestations of acne are observed in approximately 5% of women and 3% of men aged 40-49 years. In rare cases, acne occurs at an older age,” — she explained.
The first reason is hormonal imbalance. It is he who leads to disturbances in the work of the sebaceous glands, as a result, rashes begin on the face. In women, it occurs before menstruation, during pregnancy, during premenopause and menopause, and hormonal contraceptives also cause a rash.
“For example, the appearance of acne before menstruation is associated with increased production of progesterone, which occurs after ovulation. During menopause, the level of female hormones decreases significantly, while male hormones, on the contrary, increase, which is also accompanied by the appearance of acne,” the doctor specified.
The second reason is chronic stress. Against its background, cortisol is excessively produced, after which acne and oily sheen appear on the face. In addition, the protective functions of the skin are reduced, due to which it reacts more sharply to external and internal influences.
The third reason is the use of inappropriate home skin care products. So, products with vegetable oils increase the fat content of the skin and, accordingly, lead to the development of acne. In addition, intensive washing increases the work of the sebaceous glands and causes a rash. Therefore, to cleanse the skin, it is recommended to choose a mild remedy, and wash it no more than twice a day.
“This applies to exfoliants and harsh scrubs. Such products, if used too often, can damage the skin and aggravate existing problems. For deep cleansing of the skin, it is recommended to use mild products that do not irritate the skin. Typically, such products contain lactic, salicylic or glycolic acid,” the medic continued.
The fourth reason is an unbalanced diet. It must be remembered that chocolate, fried, spicy, fatty and smoked foods, caffeinated foods and drinks, flour and pastries can provoke acne. And, finally, less common, but important reasons are heredity, endocrine diseases, problems with the gastrointestinal tract, and unfavorable ecology.
