The “Russian version” of COVID-19 “Deltakron” may be more dangerous than the Omicron strain. This opinion was shared by the chief preventive specialist of the Ural Federal District, Doctor of Medical Sciences Sergey Tokarev in an interview with URA.RU.
“The available Deltacron samples are similar to a multiple recombinant: the head and tail are from the Delta strain, the middle is from the Omicron BA.2 and BA.1 sub-lines. Scientists are concerned about this combination. Since the option that includes genetic material from Delta may turn out to be more dangerous than Omicron, ”Sergei Tokarev explained.
At the same time, the doctor of science noted that there are no reasons for panic yet. “So far, there is no information about the ability of the domestic Deltacron to elude the immune response of vaccinated and recovered patients, including new versions of Omikron. It cannot yet be said that the “Russian variant” may have a greater potential for spread than BA.4/5, or greater pathogenicity. And it is not yet known how sensitive it is to antiviral agents, for example, such as Paxlovid or Molnupiravir, as well as drugs based on monoclonal antibodies. Therefore, it is completely premature to panic yet, ”Tokarev emphasized.
Earlier, the press service of Rospotrebnadzor reported that cases of infection with the Deltacron variant of the coronavirus, which is a hybrid of the Delta and Omicron strains, were detected in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The disease in patients was mild.
