Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was premature to discuss the possibility of a peaceful settlement with Ukraine, despite the growing number of Ukrainians supporting negotiations with Russia. In his opinion, the resumption of relations between Ukraine and Russia is inevitable, since the countries are neighbors.
“To be honest, it is still premature to think so, but the fact that, despite all the propaganda flows filled with hatred for Russia, despite all the propaganda duping of the Ukrainian population, streams of sober thinking and approaches to the future of our bilateral relations still remain in the country, and they are inevitable, because we are neighbors, this is obvious, we have talked about this before,” Dmitry Peskov said at a briefing.
The day before, Secretary of the National Security Council of Ukraine (NSDC) Oleksiy Danilov said that more and more citizens of the country are in favor of peace talks with Russia. In his opinion, this is a “dangerous trend.”
In October 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree that prohibits negotiations with Russia while Vladimir Putin is its president. Later, Ukraine declared its readiness to negotiate, provided that Russia returns its territory within the 1991 borders under the control of Kyiv. In turn, Moscow demands from Kyiv to recognize its control over the Crimea, DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
