The accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO is a strategic change, said Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko. According to him, in response to the expansion of the alliance, one can expect a “political reaction” from Moscow, but any decisions will not be made on emotions.

“This change cannot be left without a political reaction, and also without a very thorough analysis of the consequences of the new configuration of forces that could be formed as a result of the next expansion of the alliance. It is clear that the decision will not be made on emotions, it will be a thorough and verified analysis of all the factors that affect the security situation in this region,” he told reporters (quoted from “RIA News”).

Finland and Sweden announced their desire to join NATO against the background of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, which began on February 24. Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that Helsinki is likely to apply to join the alliance next week. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned that if Finland decides to join a military bloc, Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps of a military-technical nature. The Permanent Representative of Finland does not see direct military threats from Russia.
