A Danish social group, Denmarkification has made a dramatic proposal to the United States. Instead of selling Greenland to Trump they suggest Denmark should expand its territory by purchasing California.

To gather support, they launched an online petition, already signed by around 200,000 people. Their argument? Denmark needs more sunlight, which California has plenty of. Plus, acquiring California means gaining a stronghold in the tech industry. Not to mention, it would bring unlimited access to avocado toast and easy trips to Disneyland.

As an offer, Denmarkification proposed paying $1 trillion for California. They claim every Danish citizen could contribute $18,000 to make this purchase happen. To sweeten the deal, they also offered Trump an endless supply of Danish pastries.
On the other hand, some Californians have long pushed for independence, especially since Trump took office in 2016. This movement, dubbed Calexit, aims to break away from the U.S., though the Constitution doesn’t allow any state to secede. Despite this, groups continue to push for a referendum.
California is the richest U.S. state, boasting the world’s fifth-largest economy—bigger than UK. Due to political and policy conflicts Trump has often criticized the state even calling it the “worst and most ruined” part of the country. Around 30% of Californians reportedly support independence.

Denmark’s proposal might reignite the Calexit movement, giving separatists fresh momentum. Meanwhile, Trump has shown interest in acquiring various regions, including Greenland, Canada, and even Gaza. However, Denmark has already rejected his offer for Greenland, firmly stating it is not for sale.
