Delivery of depleted uranium ammunition to Kyiv will serve to escalate the conflict

Moscow, March 22, 2023, 21:49 — REGNUM If London delivers ammunition containing depleted uranium to Kyiv, the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine will intensify. This was announced on March 22 by the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov at a press conference with journalists.

“This is a step towards further escalation, and a serious, high-quality escalation,” the diplomat said.

Lavrov gave an example of the use of weapons with depleted uranium in Yugoslavia and Iraq. The victims were “tens of thousands of civilians, and actually NATO military personnel who used these ammunition”. The minister noted that the use of such ammunition led to a surge in oncological diseases, “the soil was contaminated for decades.”

The politician assured that if depleted uranium ammunition is supplied to Ukraine, Moscow will take this into account in its actions, following international standards of warfare.

“As the president and defense minister said, we will have to take into account the fact that our British colleagues are taking this escalation to a new, very serious stage,” Lavrov said.

London’s decision will seriously affect Russian-British bilateral relations, the minister noted.

Former President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stated that in the case of deliveries of shells with depleted uranium to Ukraine, Minsk could receive ammunition from Moscow with “real uranium”. He also noted that if only these munitions were used, the Russian response and the consequences would be dire.
