Chahar featured in two of India’s three matches on the tour of Zimbabwe, taking five wickets including a 3/27 in his return match in Harare. He was named as one of the standbys in the team and traveled with the Indian team to Dubai for the tournament, where he was seen training in practice sessions. Gavaskar on India Today said, ‘I would like to see Deepak Chahar in the World Cup squad. Because he can prove to be a lethal bowler in Australia.
“If you know we have always picked around 4-5 bowlers for Australia or South Africa tour and if they get ruined then they have to focus on that. But in a fast paced tournament like T20, I think Deepak Chahar will be beneficial for the Indian team. Speaking further in support of Chahar’s inclusion in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup, Robin Uthappa has remarked that he likes Rajasthan pacer as well as young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah. And with Harshal Patel the bowlers can complete the department.
He said, ‘He will bowl three in the Bhuvneshwar top six and then in the middle or death overs. But I feel like we will have Harshal and Bumrah who will mainly bowl at the death. And he will probably play till the tail end or he will bowl an over just before the death or if you want wickets in the middle overs, he can be used. Uthappa said, ‘I think he is going to be in the team. Indian team will go with five fast bowlers and I think Arshdeep and Deepak Chahar will be Hardik Pandya along with Bumrah, Bhuvi and Harshal.
