State government employees in West Bengal are protesting demanding an increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) at par with that of the central government. On Sunday, the agitating employees asked Governor C.V. Anand Bose to act as a mediator in this matter and demanded the Mamata Banerjee government to hold a meeting with him.
The employees said they would call off the hunger strike only after getting assurance from the state government regarding their demand. However, to end the hunger strike, the Governor met the representatives of the employees at the Raj Bhavan. The employees said, “The governor has requested us to call off the hunger strike. We had promised him that we will definitely do so, but only after getting assurance from the state government. We have received assurance from the government so far.” The employee present in the meeting said, “We want the governor to mediate in the matter and arrange a meeting with the chief minister.”
The employees said during the meeting, they want a dignified solution, insisting that the state government will have to hold a meeting with them. So far not a single minister or bureaucrat has come to meet him. After the meeting that lasted for about 20 minutes, Bose appealed to the employees to call off the hunger strike as human life is precious. Every complex problem has a solution and we should approach it with an open mind.
Demanding to increase DA at par with central government employees
The employees have been demanding for a long time an increase in DA at par with the Central Government employees. A complete strike was called from Friday. Banerjee had told the assembly earlier this week that she would not be able to meet the demand for DA hike even if she was beheaded by the protesters.
