President of the country Miguel Diaz-Canel visited the scene of the incident, which is located 130 kilometers east of Havana. Prior to the second explosion, the Cuban leader tweeted that Liberty Island’s first responders were “trying to prevent the spread of fire and any spill of fuel” in the Matanzas port area.

Cuba is suffering from daily power outages and fuel shortages, and an emergency on the country’s northern coast will exacerbate the situation, the British news agency notes.

As reported EADaily, in the midst of the unprecedented severity of sanctions imposed by the West on Russia and the energy crisis that Cuba is experiencing, a Russian tanker with fuel arrived on the island last month. The oil tanker Suvorovsky Prospekt docked at the port of Matanzas with approximately 700,000 barrels of fuel on board.
