The Leninsky District Court of Barnaul extended the detention of RusNews journalist Maria Ponomarenko until March 27, 2023. She was detained on April 23 on charges of spreading fake news about the army (207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). She was in jail for five months. On March 17, the journalist posted a post on Telegram about the shelling of the drama theater in Mariupol. On April 24, she was detained by employees of the Investigative Committee in St. Petersburg. In May, the journalist was transferred to Barnaul. Now she is in SIZO-1 of the Altai Territory. As Kommersant previously wrote, after the arrest of Maria Ponomarenko, she was forbidden to communicate with one of her minor children.
What part of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation is imputed to the journalist is not specified. Under the first part, the maximum punishment is three years in prison, under the second – up to ten years. The journalist has two minor children. On September 16, at a meeting in the Altai Regional Court, she said that she opened her veins in a pre-trial detention center due to a deterioration in her mental state in “torture” conditions.
