The Patriarchate of Georgia placed part of the blame for the attack on the Tskhramukhi convent on the media.
The attack on the monastery in the Khashuri municipality took place on 25 November. According to the Novosti-Georgia portal, an elderly nun was taken to the hospital in serious condition – she was beaten and raped. Two people have been detained.
“It is very unfortunate that the media were able to identify the nun, published her photo and spoke in a rude way about this crime. There was also cynicism… which is an example of immorality and ruthlessness,” – the statement of the Patriarchy of Georgia says.
Prior to this, the official representative of the Patriarchate accused the Georgian media of conducting “anti-church propaganda”, as a result of which a “perverted ideology is developing in the country, which removes all obstacles with the help of desacralization.” Part of the blame for what happened lies with the media, according to the Patriarchate.
The Public Defender of Georgia, in response, urged not to create an “enemy image” in the face of the press and warned that such statements by the Patriarchate could provoke attacks on journalists, “which have been seen many times already.”
