Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs in the final match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 to win the title. With this, CSK’s team under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni was successful in winning the IPL trophy for the fourth time. Chasing a colossal target of 193 runs, KKR could manage only 165 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs despite half-centuries from Venkatesh Iyer (50) and Shubman Gill (51). In the bowling, Shardul Thakur took three wickets and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets for CSK. Earlier, after losing the toss, Chennai scored 192 runs for the loss of just 3 wickets in 20 overs on the back of Faf du Plessis’s 86 runs and Moeen Ali’s swashbuckling knock of 37 runs in 20 balls in the last over. Robin Uthappa made 31 and Rituraj Gaikwad contributed 32 runs. From Kolkata’s side, only Sunil Narine looked impressive and he took two wickets in his name.
Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer gave a blazing start to Kolkata Knight Riders’ team chasing a huge target like 193 and both added 91 runs for the first wicket in just 10.4 overs. Venkatesh became the victim of Shardul Thakur to score 50 runs. A ball after this, Shardul let Nitish Rana walk without opening the account. Sunil Narine (2) did a good job with the ball, but he could not show anything special with the bat. After scoring 51 runs, Shubman Gill was found in front of the wickets off Deepak Chahar and returned to the pavilion leaving the team in a difficult situation. After this, Kolkata’s batting order was shattered like a pack of cards and captain Eoin Morgan (4), Dinesh Karthik (9) and Shakib Al Hasan went on without opening an account. For CSK, Shardul Thakur took three and Ravindra Jadeja and Josh Hazlewood took two wickets each.
Earlier, after losing the toss, Chennai Super Kings gave a solid start to Rituraj Gaikwad (32) and Faf du Plessis (86) and both added 61 runs for the first wicket in 8.1 overs. Rituraj got caught in Sunil Narine’s spin net and after seeing Shivam Mavi, he kept walking. After this, Robin Uthappa, who came to the crease, took the news of KKR’s bowlers fiercely and scored 31 runs in just 15 balls with the help of 3 sixes. Naren also sent Uthappa to the pavilion. In the UAE leg, Moeen Ali, who was longing for runs so far, played a lot in the final and he played a stormy innings of 37 runs in just 20 balls, hitting 2 fours and three sixes. Du Plessis scored 86 runs in 59 balls and he was out on the last ball of the innings.
