The Government of Canada wants to require all tobacco manufacturers to print a warning about the dangers of smoking on every single cigarette.
According to an Ukrinform correspondent, this was announced in ministry of health Canada.
“A key feature of the proposed changes is the introduction of a written warning printed on every single cigarette, filter cigar or cigarette tube,” the report said.
It is noted that if the proposed changes are accepted Canada will be the first country in the world with such stringent requirements. “The new packaging will ensure that health-related messages reach people who frequently smoke the same cigarette together, especially young people. Labeling every cigarette and other tobacco-containing products will virtually eliminate the possibility of a warning being missed,” the health ministry said.
Before accepting such changes, the government announced a 75-day consultation period during which all interested parties can express their reservations and wishes. “Despite decades of effort, tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Canada, with tobacco killing about 48,000 Canadians every year,” the agency said.
