Canada has announced the suspension of its popular parental sponsorship program for permanent residents, a move that will halt new applications in 2024.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller directed expedited processing of pending applications but clarified that no new sponsorship applications will be accepted this year.

Under the now-suspended program, permanent residents could sponsor their parents and grandparents to join them in Canada.
This decision aligns with the government’s strategy to address challenges posed by rapid population growth such as increased pressure on housing and healthcare systems.
Instead, families can consider the Super Visa Program, which allows parents and grandparents of permanent residents to live in Canada for up to five years. This initiative provides an alternative for families seeking to reunite.
