The US State Department announced its readiness for dialogue with Russia on START

The United States is ready for dialogue with Russia within the framework of the START Treaty, but is disappointed by the fact that the implementation of the provisions of the agreement is linked to the situation around Ukraine. This was announced to reporters on Friday during a virtual briefing by US Deputy Secretary of State for Arms Control Bonnie Jenkins.

The treaty remains the only U.S.-Russian nuclear arms control agreement, having previously been extended until 2026. The talk of the parties about further prolongation of the agreement was stopped after the start of a special military operation. As Parlamentskaya Gazeta wrote, the Russian Foreign Ministry rejected US accusations of violating the provisions of the New START Treaty, suggesting that they first deal with their own weapons, which violate the treaty.

“Our goal is to make it clear that we are ready to meet them when they are ready. It is a pity that they link this to what is happening in Ukraine, ”Jenkins quotes RIA Novosti. According to her, the American side is interested in contact with Moscow.

Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that accusations by the United States of non-compliance with the terms of the START could only cause a sarcastic smile. As the diplomat explained, Moscow does not see the fulfillment of the treaty by Washington.
