Biden promised Finland and Sweden to quickly approve NATO applications

US President Joe Biden supports the decision of Finland and Sweden to join NATO. He expects them to be quickly accepted into the alliance. This statement was published on site White House. He promised that the United States would “restrain aggression against Finland and Sweden” while NATO studies their applications.

“I warmly welcome and support the historic bids of Finland and Sweden to join NATO and look forward to working with the US Congress and our NATO partners to quickly bring Finland and Sweden into the strongest alliance in history,” he said in a statement.

Joe Biden also hopes that after the countries join the alliance, the United States will be able to expand military cooperation with them. He added that countries will continue to work on security in the region. Mr. Biden recalled that tomorrow, May 19, he would meet at the White House with Swedish Prime Minister Eva-Magdalena Andersson and Finnish President Sauli Niinistö on May 19 to discuss countries’ accession to NATO.

Sweden and Finland officially applied to join NATO this morning, 18 May. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reported that NATO was counting on “quick steps” to formalize their membership. Later this afternoon, the media reported that Turkey had blocked the start of talks on Finland and Sweden joining NATO. Russia promised to give a “military surprise” to Finland if it joins the alliance.
