Biden announces new sanctions against Iran

The US will impose sanctions this week on Iranian officials involved in violence against protesters in the country. This is stated in a statement by US President Joe Biden, published on site White House.

“I remain deeply concerned about reports of an intensifying violent crackdown on peaceful protests in Iran, including against students and women who are demanding equal rights and respect for human dignity,” Mr. Biden said.

The protests in Iran have been going on for more than ten days. They began because of the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the vice police for allegedly wearing the hijab incorrectly. Iranian security forces claim that the girl passed out from a heart attack. Her family believes that she died after being beaten. According to media reports, at least 40 people died during the protests, more than 1.2 thousand were taken into custody. Iranian spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei claims the riots were planned by the US and Israeli authorities.
