China opposes the expansion of the US nuclear arsenal, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, rejecting the notion of a “Chinese nuclear threat” as a pretext for the US to build up its nuclear capabilities.
On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian commented on the US’s classified nuclear strategy, stating that Beijing is firmly opposed to the US expanding its nuclear arsenal under the guise of a “Chinese nuclear threat” that does not exist.
Earlier, The New York Times reported that in March, US President Joe Biden approved a classified nuclear strategy that, for the first time, outlines plans to counter China’s growing nuclear arsenal and prepare for coordinated challenges from Beijing, Pyongyang, and Moscow.

“China resolutely opposes the US expanding its nuclear arsenal and shirking its own disarmament obligations under the pretext of a non-existent ‘Chinese nuclear threat’,” Wu Qian stressed.
He emphasized that China has always adhered to a self-defense nuclear strategy and maintains its nuclear capabilities at the minimum level necessary to ensure national security.
