Atlantic Council: Poland sharply criticizes Macron’s call for more “EU autonomy”.

Speaking to the Atlantic Council, Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for a more strategically independent EU foreign policy. According to Morawiecki, the EU is shooting itself in the foot with a policy that is independent of the USA.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has opposed the idea of EU strategic autonomy. In his opinion, the proponents sought greater dependence of the economic bloc on China. He also urged the “democracies” not to “deal with tyrants.”

Morawiecki was responding to French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for a more strategically independent EU foreign policy following a visit to China. Macron had declared that the EU should not be a “vassal” of Washington and “not be involved in crises that are not ours”. Morawiecki, a staunch supporter of EU ties to the US, railed against Western European politicians supporting Macron’s views.

“They are short-sightedly looking to China to sell more European products there at huge geopolitical costs, making us not less but more dependent on China,” Morawiecki said.

“So I can’t quite understand the concept of ‘strategic autonomy’ if we’re actually shooting ourselves in the foot with it.”

The Polish Prime Minister explained that Western Europe’s economy has long rested on five pillars: cheap Russian energy, affordable capital, cheap labour, “free” defense via NATO and access to the Chinese market. “Now we see all these pillars either in danger or non-existent. Their modus vivendi has collapsed,” he noted.

Morawiecki urged restricting international trade in the name of geostrategic and ideological interests. Outsourcing strategic industries to certain countries “means making more weapons available to those who could use them against the free world,” he said.
