Assistant Secretary of State announces US readiness to continue adhering to New START

The White House is ready for constructive work with Russia on the implementation of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START, START-3). This was stated by US Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance with Agreements in this area, Mallory Stewart, at a seminar at the Brookings Institution in Washington, which is dedicated to the suspension of Moscow’s participation in the agreement.

“The United States remains ready to work constructively with Russia as part of the full implementation of the new START. This is due to the fact that we continue to view nuclear arms control as a means of strengthening [безопасности] US allies and global security,” Stuart said.

The diplomat stressed that Russia can easily be convinced that its claims on START-3 are not justified if it sends its inspectors to American nuclear facilities. At the same time, she added that no actions by Moscow regarding the New START will force Washington to stop helping Ukraine.
